COVID-19 Requirements

Currently researchers for off-campus fieldwork in disciplines involving in-person human participant research, Behavioral Research Ethics Board (BREB) guidelines must be followed.  For projects receiving ethics approval, no further application from researchers will be required.

Before starting a COVID-19 Field Work Safe Work Plan, please:

  1. Familiarize yourself with BC’s current province wide restrictions.
  2. Ensure you have completed a UBC Field Work Safety Plan for your travel and fieldwork activities.
  3. Draft your Field Work Safety Plan – COVID-19 Addendum.

For off-campus fieldwork in the natural and applied sciences, researchers must be capable of travelling to and from research sites in compliance with current government and University travel advisories and restrictions.

If this is possible and field work activities are intended, researchers are required to complete a Field Work Safety Plan – COVID-19 Addendum (this is in addition to the general requirements for a UBC Field Work Safety Plan).

Approvals

Heads of unit will provide initial approval for off-campus fieldwork requests, followed by Dean’s offices. Contact information must be provided for all field work crew members as part of your request (in Field Work Safety Plan). In all cases, the request must include confirmation that your fieldwork activity is aligned with WorkSafeBC regulatory requirements and any Faculty specific field safety guidelines.  Please include a copy of the fieldwork safety plan for the project with your request.

Due to the rapidly changing nature of public health conditions, approvals will be offered on a provisional basis, to be confirmed two weeks before the planned field activities.  Confirmation is the responsibility of the PI and should be made with the appropriate Associate Dean Research unless otherwise stated.
